Dr. Li Pengde Attended the 4th High Level Forum on UN-GGIM
The Fourth High Level Forum on United Nations Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM) was held from 20-22 April 2016 at UNECA’s Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The forum was jointly organized by UN-GGIM, the Government of Ethiopia and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). H.E. Dr. Mulatu Teshome, President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia gave an opening statement at the opening ceremony of the forum. About 300 participants from 57 governments, 7 UN agencies, 61 non-governmental organizations and the industry attended the forum.
Dr. Li Pengde, Deputy Director General of NASG, attended the Forum as Co-Chair of UN-GGIM, and made his welcome remarks at the opening ceremony on behalf of the three Co-Chairs of UN-GGIM.
The overarching theme of the forum is “Good Land Governance for the 2030 Agenda”. Land information and its management are fundamental to successful land administration and the derived benefits to the economies, and overall sustainable development of nations. Therefore, the forum focused on land administration and management, with particular emphasis on sharing experiences, including benefits and challenges, considering fit for purpose aspects, digital land registers, cadastres, and other land data needs, demonstrating practical examples of land administration success stories.
About 60 speakers presented at the Ministerial Segment and the five technical sessions on Land Information for Sustainable Development, Good Governance and Regulatory Frameworks, Geospatial Land Information Management, Technology and Capacity Development, and Shared Objectives and Partnerships.
Three experts from China gave presentations at the forum. The presentations were Mapping Land Dynamically for Sustainable Development by Dr. Li Pengde, Deputy Director General of NASG; China’s Land Survey for Land Governance by Dr. Guo Renzhong, Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and Counsel of Shenzhen Municipal Commission of Land, Resources and Planning; and Geodesign for Sustainable Development by Dr. Cao Chunhua, Chief Architect of Chongqing Municipal Planning Bureau and Director General of Chongqing Municipal Geoinformation Bureau.
The outcome document “Addis Ababa Declaration: Geospatial Information Management towards Good Land Governance for the 2030 Agenda” was adopted at the closing of the forum. In the Declaration the participants expressed, inter alia, the appreciation for NASG’s contributions to capacity development support to UN-GGIM: Africa countries, including the organization and conduct of the International Workshop on Land Cover Technology and Application on April 18-19 as a side event of the forum.
