Remarkable Achievements Made in Application of GlobeLand30
In the past two years since the Chinese Government provided GlobeLand30 to the UN and the international community in September 2014, remarkable achievements have been made in the application of the datasets. By September 2016, more than 6,000 users from 118 countries have downloaded the data from the platform http://www.globeland30.org for uses in various areas, such as climate change, disaster mitigation, land use and land cover change monitoring, ecological environment, urbanization and agriculture.
The users of Globeland30 are from all the continents of the world. Among the 118 countries of the users, the top ones besides China are USA, India, UK, Germany, Italy, France, Canada, Brazil, the Netherlands and Russia. Over 200 international and national organizations and about 300 institutions of higher education are the users of GlobeLand30. Among the important users are the specialized agencies of the UN, such as FAO, UNEP, UN Peacekeeping Operations, UNESCO, and UN Habitat.
GlobeLand30 has provided new fundamental data for research activities in certain areas. 24% uses are directly for climate change and disaster mitigation, while 70% are indirectly for climate change analysis. According to the spatial statistics of the data downloaded by users, it is found that GlobeLand30 was mostly used in Africa and Asia. GlobeLand30 has filled the gap in high-quality land cover information and provided an unprecedented platform for the developing countries in sustainable development research and decision-making support.
Meanwhile, to assist with the capacity building of the developing countries in land cover mapping, a number of training workshops have been organized by the National Administration of Surveying, Mapping and Geoinformation of China, in cooperation with the Secretariat of the UN Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management.
