1. Current situation of the Map World

The Map World ( is an Internet-based map service website independently developed by China. On January 18, 2011, the Map World, as a Chinese geographic information service website with the most comprehensive data resources, was officially launched, and began to provide the general public and enterprises with authoritative, credible and uniform geographic information services. On July 28, 2011, the Map World Mobile Map was officially launched; on May 22, 2012, the beta version of Map World Mobile API (Android) V1.0 was released; on September 13, 2012, the Mobile Map World Android 1.5 was launched; on January 8, 2013, the Mobile Map World Android 2.0 was officially launched; on January 31, 2013, the beta version of “Map World · Travel World” was released; on March 1, 2013, the beta version of Map World V2.0 website was released; on March 18, 2013, the Map World website V2.0 was officially launched.

Along with more and more applications and demands, the Map World will continue to expand the data type, enrich the data content, and enhance the up-to-date state and coverage of data, accelerate the construction of the Map World cloud platform, the construction of the data center and convergence of provincial and city-level services, open the English version, three-dimensional city map and TV-version prototype system in due time and improve the mobile version, so as to provide the society and the public with all-around geographic information services and foster an excellent Chinese national brand of Internet geographic information services.

2. Main features of the Map World

Firstly, it integrates mass geographic information resources. The nationwide 1:250k public map data, navigation electronic map data, 15m-resolution satellite remote sensing image, 2.5m-resolution satellite remote sensing image and 0.5m-resolution remote sensing image in over 300 cities across the country.

Secondly, it offers “one-stop” geographic information services for free. The Map World provides services around the clock in the forms of portal website and service interface. As the main entrance and major node of public geographic information services, the portal website ( features two-dimensional & three-dimensional browsing of geographic information data, geographic name search and positioning, distance and area measurement, labeling of interest point as well as printing of screen shot, etc. Alternatively, it allows users to directly access the national directory service system of surveying & mapping results, relevant thematic geographic information service websites and provincial Internet geographic information service websites. The service interface facilitates specialized agencies, enterprises and personal users to inquire about various geographic information resources integrated in the Map World as required, and embed such resources to the existing geographic information system or service website; also, it may help the users build a new application system or service website rapidly that is based on geographic spatial location. The Map World offers standard geographic information service interfaces and various APIs (application program interface), allowing users to conduct value-added development.

Thirdly, it possesses proprietary intellectual property right. The Map World adopts software products with proprietary intellectual property rights, creates a service system consisting of data processing, data management and maintenance, online service and API. The tile data service concurrent response exceeds 15,000 times/s and the geographic name search service concurrent response exceeds 2,000 times/s.

Fourthly, it has created relatively complete mechanism for data and website updating. Based on the uniform standard, the data in the Map World are generated and supplied by national, provincial and city-level administrative departments in charge of surveying and mapping and relevant specialized departments as well as enterprises in the manner of “separate construction, information sharing, coordinated updating, online integration” and on the principle of “the suppliers and owners are responsible for updating”. In the case of emergency, it allows adoption of various technological means and methods for prompt updating of the local data. In addition, the Map World portal website updates services and adds or reduces information through “information release”, and offers channels for suggestion feedback from users, so as to solicit opinions for improvement in a timely manner.
