Status of Standardization

China has begun to formulate its surveying & mapping geographic information standards since 1950s, starting with the 2 technical regulations of “Geodetic Surveying Rules of the People’s Republic of China” and “Basic Regulations on Surveying and Mapping”. It always adheres to the concept of providing effective support to the fundamental surveying & mapping construction, major surveying & mapping projects and the industrial development, constantly strengthens top-level design and development planning, intensify overall planning and coordination of surveying & mapping geographic information standardization, actively promotes formulation and revision of surveying & mapping geographic information standards. After dozens of years of unremitting efforts and steady development, China has preliminarily created a systematic and feasible surveying & mapping geographic information standard system featuring distinct hierarchy, scientific classification and excellent coordination. It released and implemented “National Geographic Information Standard System” and “Surveying & Mapping Standard System” in 2009. As of the end of 2012, China had formulated approximately 230 surveying & mapping geographic information standards, including 110 national standards and about 120 industrial standards.
